Background
David Auburn was born on November 30, 1969 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He is the son of Mark and Sandy Auburn. His mother worked first for the East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging in Jonesboro and then as the assistant deputy director of the Division of Aging and Adult Services for the Arkansas Department of Human Services in Little Rock. His father was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro and then Vice President for Planning and Management Support of the University of Arkansas System.
Education
David Auburn graduated from high school in 1987. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from the University of Chicago in 1991 and from 1994 to 1996 attended Juilliard School.
In 1997, the first play of Auburn - Skyscraper was put on at the off-Broadway theater. His short play, What Do You Believe About the Future? was published in Harper’s Magazine and was later adapted for the movie script.
In 2000, Auburn's new play, Proof, was produced. It ran for more than two years, and in 2001 was honored with a number of awards, including the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award. The play was adapted by the author into a film.
Some time later, Auburn wrote the script for the movie Lake House, released by Warner Bros. in 2006, and the next year he first acted as a film director, having shot the film The Girl in the Park, for which he wrote the screenplay.
In 2012, his new play Columnist was staged on Broadway, based on the biography of Washington journalist Joseph Aslop. Two years later, the Manhattan Theater Club presented Auburn's drama Lost Lake. Among the other works of Auburn are a one-act play Upset, Fifth Planet, Miss You and The Next Life.
David Auburn is also an author of documentaries for cable music station VH-1.
