Career
David Blaine practised as a partner at Bowman Gilfillan Hayman Godfrey Inc., a corporate law practice in South Africa. The Hayman Godfrey component of the firm had been established in 1902, and Bowman Gilfillan was formed through a 1998 merger of three firms: Bowman Gilfillan Hayman Godfrey, Findlay & Tait (established 1885), and John & Kernick (established 1923). The combined firm grew into one of South Africa's large corporate practices, with clients that have included investment banks, industrial conglomerates, financial institutions, and governments.
His practice covered general practice together with corporate, commercial, taxation, real estate, and deceased estates law. Corporate and commercial work formed a central part of the firm's business, and the firm's international ranking awards during the 2000s reflected its standing in African corporate law.
A firm alumni publication also names him among colleagues from Bowman, Gilfillan and Blacklock, a practice name that appears alongside Hayman Godfrey in the firm's alumni history. In 2016 the firm's Africa Group adopted the brand name Bowmans, effective 1 September 2016.
