In 1965 he began teaching drawing and painting at the University of Alberta, until retiring from his position in 1996. Cantine"s work in the beginning of his career was figurative art, but he began to experiment with abstraction in the 1970s, and in 1975 became inspired by a photograph of a pair of apples casting round shadows.
