Cheney received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Utah in 1948. A year later he earned his Master of Arts degree from Harvard University. In 1955, David was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Iowa.
Cheney began his career as a teaching assistant at the University of Iowa in 1953. Three years later he took a position of an instructor at Lewis and Clark College. Then in 1958, David became an associate professor at Missouri State University, where he worked until 1968. In addition, since 1965, he had served as a professor at the University of Toledo.
Cheney was a member of American Association of the University of Professors, Modern Language Association, Central Renaissance Society of America, Shakespeare Association of America, Modern Humanities Research Association and Phi Beta Kappa.
On December 18, 1948 Cheney married Patricia Anne Snow. They have a child.
