He received his bachelor of arts from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1997 with a double major in English and History. While in university, Cochrane worked as the news editor for his student newspaper, The Muse.

He works with Canadian Broadcasting Company Television news program Here and Now and with Canadian Broadcasting Company Radio. Cochrane hosts the political television program "On Point with David Cochrane" as well as "On Point Radio". In 1998 he worked with Canadian University Press as the Ottawa Bureau Chief.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (Canadian Broadcasting Company) took interest in Cochrane while he was writing columns for The Telegram, Saint John"s daily newspaper.
His Canadian Broadcasting Company career began as a summer job and became full-time employment. He has described his role as a reporter as "part-gossip, part-detective." He has broken a number of stories about political happenings in the province.
In early 2007, he gave an address to the Saint John"s Board of Trade that critiqued the habit of provincial politicians using the legislature to change the ground rules in various confrontations with industry and business.
