David Hartstein is an Australian lawyer and partner at Holman Webb, a commercial and insurance law firm in Sydney. He studied at the Australian National University, earning Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws degrees, and was admitted to the bar in New South Wales in 1980.
Education
Hartstein studied at the Australian National University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws. The university was established by an Act of the federal parliament in 1946 and is the only Australian university created by national legislation. It was initially conceived as a postgraduate research institution, and it admitted undergraduates for the first time in 1960, when Canberra University College became part of it.
The ANU law program has roots in a Faculty of Law established at Canberra University College in 1958. When that college was incorporated into the university's School of General Studies in 1960, the law faculty came with it, and the ANU Law School dates its establishment to that year.
Hartstein was admitted to the bar in New South Wales in 1980, and his subsequent legal career developed in Sydney.
Career
Hartstein is a partner at Holman Webb, a law firm established in Sydney in 1960. The firm developed into a commercial and insurance practice with offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. Its areas of work include banking and finance, business and corporate matters, insurance, workplace relations, dispute resolution and commercial recovery and insolvency.
In 2021, the firm reported 21 partners and nearly 200 staff across its four offices, and it was recognized that year as an Employer of Choice in the Australian Business Awards. Holman Webb's lawyers include many who had earlier worked in-house or for government departments before joining the firm.
More recently, Holman Webb formed a strategic alliance with Hicksons | Hunt & Hunt, a mid-tier national firm. All ten Holman Webb partners joined the alliance, which brought the combined group to 49 partners and 451 staff across five Australian cities.
