(Are you trying to do it all yourself? Rev. J. David Muysk...)
Are you trying to do it all yourself? Rev. J. David Muyskens reminds us that what God seeks is relationship with us, a two-way communication. What relationship with God requires is very similar to what our earthly relationships require: openness, listening, focused time. One way to practice the skills needed for this relationship is centering prayer, a simple but deeply powerful prayer practice. In beautiful and accessible language, Muyskens invites us to spend time daily focusing our hearts on God, to find the power to be still and be reoriented to the One who is the Center of all.

(Nearly 20 million Americans suffer from anxiety disorders...)
Nearly 20 million Americans suffer from anxiety disorders-ranging from fears of specific objects like elevators to complex conditions that make it difficult to function in daily life. Sometimes their fears are like mythical monsters in caves-growing scarier in the imagination as they hide in the shadows, haunting the minds of the sufferers. In this book, David Mellinger and Steven Jay Lynn, respected scholars and clinicians with over fifty years' experience between them, cast a bright light on "the monster in the cave," offering a menu of techniques to help confront and calm the fears, panic attacks and phobias that so many people endure-often hiding them from friends and loved ones for fear of seeming weak. In this accessible guide, Mellinger and Lynn review effective treatments including cognitive-behavioral therapy and SSRI antidepressants. They also offer a new approach that applies the time-tested principles of reverse engineering to these disorders-to help sufferers understand the inner workings of anxiety and rebuild their lives from the ground up.

("Little of what Paul said to his contemporaries at Coloss...)
"Little of what Paul said to his contemporaries at Colossae is out of date. Their sickness persists to the present. But so does the Bible's ability to speak to it," says Dr. David Hubbard. COLOSSIANS SPEAKS TO THE SICKNESS OF OUR TIMES is a series of meditations on Paul's letter to the Colossians complete with prayers and related Scripture references for further study. Originally presented by these meditations bridge the centuries to show how God's Word to a struggling church in the early days of our faith is still relevant to our current situation. The church at Colossae suffered from apathy, rebellion, superstition, legalism, ethical confusion, ingratitude, immorality, irresponsibility, and rebelliousness--the symptoms of the same disease that devastates our modern world. In his letter the Apostle Paul offered strong antidotes--the lordship of Christ, Christian liberty, and humble leadership. The Holy Scriptures bring us "the diagnosis of our sickness and the prescription for our wholeness," says Dr. Hubbard. "Our modernity has not made God's Word less penetrating in its analysis or less powerful in its healing." "Our times are sick, discouragingly so. We get weak-kneed just thinking about them...But the remedy is at hand. Jesus Christ is still the Great Physician. His love, grace and power have not lost their healing touch."

(Joel's arresting imagery--blasting trumpet, darkened sun ...)
Joel's arresting imagery--blasting trumpet, darkened sun and marching hosts--has shaped the church's eschatological vision of a day of wrath. Amos's ringing indictments--callous oppression, heartless worship and self-seeking gain--have periodically awakened the conscience of God's people. Twenty-five-hundred years after they were first born, those prophetic words never fail to awaken and arrest. Viewed against the background of their culture and society, artistry and context, these visions and oracles take on even more vibrant colors and cleaner lines. This commentary is a valuable guide to the fascinating world and challenging word of these two prophets. Ever mindful of the wider context and composition of these ancient but living texts, David Hubbard shows how Joel and Amos addressed Israel's mind and heart. The original, unrevised text of this volume has been completely retypeset and printed in a larger, more attractive format with the new cover design for the series

(A wanton and adulterous woman repeatedly spurns the love ...)
A wanton and adulterous woman repeatedly spurns the love of her youth. Her betrayed and grieving husband offers forgiveness and seeks to restore the intimacy of their first love. Bold imagery indeed for telling the story of God and his people. Bolder still when God calls a prophet to enflesh this divine suffering and redeeming forgiveness in his own marriage. Yet this remarkable story sets the stage for Hosea's message of God's enduring love, his righteous judgement and his persistent offer of reconciliation. This commentary explores the historical, cultural, literary and theological dimensions of the book of Hosea. Distilled from a career of biblical scholarship, theological reflection and masterful teaching, David Hubbard has been studying, teaching and thinking about Hosea for a long time. He frankly admits he can't imagine himself "as a human being, let alone as a believing person, without the deposit of Hosea's political, moral and spiritual insights." Find out why. The original, unrevised text of this volume has been completely retypeset and printed in a larger, more attractive format with the new cover design for the series.

(How to make choices now that you won’t regret later. You...)
How to make choices now that you won’t regret later. You may be wondering how you ended up where you are, whether your life would have been better if you had made different decisions along the way. Or maybe your current situation is great, but you’re facing some difficult choices. God wants to help you. Every day you and I are faced with innumerable decisions, some of which have the potential to change the course of our lives forever. Certain avenues open to us are marked with hidden pitfalls or lead in harmful directions. And in some instances the wrong choice can even bring death. Where do you go for direction? What do you do when faced with temptation? How do you decide what choices to make? This study answers those questions by exploring the role of Scripture and the Holy Spirit in the process, as well as examining the decision-making of people such as David, Josiah, Eve, and Jesus. As a result, my friend, I pray you will be equipped to make choices that bring honor to God and peace to your heart. --Kay Arthur The 40-Minute Bible Studies tackle vital issues in short, easy-to-grasp lessons for personal or group use–with no homework required.

Studying the Old Testament is meant to be so much more than just taking a journey into the roots of the Christian faith. It is meant to be a journey into the heart of God, to usher us into the knowledge and understanding of the beautiful, fascinating, passionate, loving God of the universe. It is critical, especially at this time in history, that we pursue the knowledge of God and seek to understand His Word. Most people lack the tools, the confidence, or the interest to devote themselves to a focused study of the Bible, a book that often seems difficult to understand and connect with …

(A terrifying descent into madness, the first fearful step...)
A terrifying descent into madness, the first fearful steps on the path to recovery, this uncompromising memoir captures all the urgent and hypnotic tension of a commercial thriller. A Second Coming-the companion volume to Swartz's great long-poem "The Will to Christ"-is a probing investigation of the unconscious and metaphysical wellsprings of a singular poetic gift. And yet it is more. This story is without question the most accurate portrayal to date of the largely uncharted regions of schizophrenia, a compelling and solitary journey into yogic meditation and a massive abuse of cannabis non-indica. Swartz's manic delusion was the very overthrow of God and cleansing of the evolutionary process. After a twelve-day descent into terror, strapped to a hospital gurney, he emerges to an uncertain future and the realization that his whole experience was neither reality, nor, even more strangely, anything approaching fantasy.

Quotes from others about the person
Richard Mouw: "David Allan Hubbard was widely acknowledged as a person who took evangelical theological scholarship into a position of leadership in the larger world of higher education. His influence in theological education was obvious, but he also played a key role in bringing together previously separate segments of the evangelical community in new coalitions."
David Winter: "He was a statesman for the evangelical communit. He constantly built bridges with the Jewish and Catholic communities. On the West Coast, Presbyterians are more evangelical than they are other places, and that's due to the work of David Hubbard."
David Hubbard married Ruth Doyal on August 12, 1949. They had one child, Mary Ruth.
