James was born in Treorchy, and played at club level for Treorchy Reconstruction Finance Corporation, as a Hooker, id est (that is) number 2, and playing club level rugby league (RL) for Leeds, as a hooker, id est (that is) number 9, during the era of contested scrums. He died in Rhondda.
