In New York he entered the office of Edward Thompson and practiced in association with him until the outbreak of the Civil War. Some years later John Jardine arrived in New York to join his brother in a partnership, in which George Jardine, a third brother, and John Jardin subsequently became members.
During the eighties the firm of Jardine & Jardine acquired a large and successful practice, credited with the design of several important buildings of the period, among which should be mentioned the original Fifth Avenue Theatre at 24th Street; Synagogue at 63rd St. and Lexington Ave.; Alpine Building, Broadway and 33rd.; the Wilbraham Apartment House, 5th Ave. and 30th St.; and the Apprentice Library, a remodelling of the old Robinson Hall on 16th St.
A staunch Presbyterian, David Jardine (alone or with associates) designed several churches of that denomination in New York.
