The firm was founded in 1902 by John Theodore Goddard in the City of London and developed as a balanced general practice with an emphasis on private client work. By 1946 it had eight partners, and in the late 1950s and early 1960s it attracted many company clients as its commercial practice expanded rapidly.
The firm kept a strong media and entertainment law practice into the 1990s. On 1 May 2003 Theodore Goddard merged with Addleshaw Booth & Co to form Addleshaw Goddard, ending the separate Theodore Goddard name.
