(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from The Theological and Literary Journal, Vol. 2...)
Excerpt from The Theological and Literary Journal, Vol. 2: July, 1849-April, 1850 This prophecy thus foreshows that Mount Zion is, in the last days, to be cleared of its ruins, and made the fixed site of a temple for God's worship; that all nations are to go thither for instruction respecting his will that he is there to communicate to them revelations and commands; that he is to judge between them and convince or rebuke many of them in respect to their errors and that they are under his reign to cease from their contests, discontinue the cultivation of warlike arts, and convert their weapons into implements of husbandry. The prediction is, therefore, yet to be fulfilled. The past history of the Israelites and Gentiles presents no correspondence whatever to it. David Nevins Lord was born on March 4, 1792 at Franklin, Connecticut, United States, the youngest but one of the sixteen children of Nathan and Mary (Nevins) Lord.
Lord entered Yale College, from which he graduated in 1817. With a view to entering the ministry he also studied theology, but the loss of his voice and recurring ill health closed that calling to him.
At fifteen Lord went to work in New York, where a brother was established in business. In 1823 he became an importer of dry goods. His business prospered until the great fire of 1835, in which he lost heavily; and the financial panic of 1837 played even greater havoc with his fortunes. Later an inheritance from his brother, Rufus, restored them temporarily, but soon this, too, was swept away.
In spite of the disasters in his career, Lord seems to have been a fairly skilful and sagacious business man; but it is hardly to be doubted that his inclinations and ambitions lay in another direction. His theological researches were never given up. He followed a daily program of study in Biblical prophecy, interpretation, and symbolism. In 1848 appeared the first number of a quarterly review entitled Theological and Literary Journal, of which Lord was editor. In the thirteen years of this periodical's existence most of its articles were written by the editor and his brother, Eleazar one of the early presidents of the Erie Railroad. Both men were tremendously concerned with the meaning of scriptural prophecy, and it was not unusual to give seventy-five pages of the Journal to a book review or original article on that subject. David also made excursions into geology and questioned the scientific theory of stratification. Even the Darwinian hypothesis did not escape his challenge. Had he lived fifty years later he would undoubtedly have been classified as a Fundamentalist. The Journal expired in the first year of the Civil War, but its editor lived on to 1880.
