Education
Lucey studied at Trinity College, which he attended before completing a Bachelor of Arts in 1984. Trinity was founded in 1823 as Washington College in Hartford, Connecticut, and was chartered on May 16, 1823, as the second college in Connecticut after Yale. Its founder, Episcopal Bishop Thomas Church Brownell, established the institution as an alternative to the Congregational-dominated Yale, although its charter barred the imposition of religious standards on students or faculty. The college adopted the name Trinity in 1845 and remained a liberal arts institution.
Lucey received his Juris Doctor from Vanderbilt University in 1989. Vanderbilt was founded in 1873 in Nashville, Tennessee, through a $1 million gift from Cornelius Vanderbilt, with its origins in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Its law school was established in 1874 and was the first professional school to open at the university, becoming one of the oldest law schools in the southern United States.
