Muench studied at Rochester Institute of Technology, New York (1954-55), the University of California, Santa Barbara (1955-56), and Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles, where he took his BA in 1961.
A freelance since 1961, the ASMP member was commissioned in 1975 to provide photographs for thirty-three large murals depicting the Lewis and Clark expedition at the Jefferson Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri.
Working in 4 x 5, he produces color and black- and-white landscape photographs, primarily of the western United States. His goal is to "record the spirit of the land ... to make what I see so stark and real visually that my photographs express a communication with a higher form of reality."
He has two children.
