(Excerpt from The Rise of the New Testament Very frequent...)
Excerpt from The Rise of the New Testament Very frequently the question is asked Where can I find a short and readable account in English of the formation of our New Testament? The following brief outline, with all its shortcomings, is offered to supply the obvious need disclosed by the unsatisfactory, but only truthful, an swer to that question There is none. Furthermore, it is desirable in theological and religious discussion not only that the results of scholarship be published, but also that the historic method of scholar ship be explained, as it is important that the general reader, as well as the special student, should understand, in so far as possible, the movements which produced the results. It is hoped that the following pages will supply this need as well. I know of no great period of religious awakening or of moral-reform that has not owed its vitality to the faith of the people. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Why are we here? What is the good life? More than ever to...)
Why are we here? What is the good life? More than ever today, many people are searching for a religious belief that will answer these persistent questions and yet do no violence to their intellectual and humanistic convictions. It is to these seekers, numbering in the millions, that David Muzzey's book is addressed. Republished now after the final closing of his long, vigorous career at 95, "Ethics as a Religion" is a clear and persuasive guide for those who have found the formal religions unsatisfying. Ethical Culture is the centerpost of Dr. Muzzey's book. Out of his long association with that movement, including many years as one of its Leaders, he weighs the ethical content of Christianity and other world faiths, comparing them with the Ethical fellowship and setting forth what he calls "a religion for adults" - one that seeks to bring out the best in men in their day-to-day relationships.

(Excerpt from The Challenge of Socialism I am not here ma...)
Excerpt from The Challenge of Socialism I am not here maintaining that the socialists are the true prophets or that socialism is the inevitable form of society. I am simply maintaining that it behooves us to study very carefully a movement which has grown faster in the last generation than any other movement in the history of the world, with the exception of the Moham medan religion in the years immediately following the death of the prophet. The socialist vote increased in the United States from in the presidential election of 1900 to in that of 1904. In France it increased from in 1887 to in 1906; in Germany from in 1887 to (far the largest party vote in the Empire) in 1903; and in the countries of western E'urope and the United States from in 1870 to in 1905. As yet we do scarcely more than rub our eyes and stare at these figures. But they in vite us to read and ponder. In the brief hour at my disposal I have planned to deal with three aspects o-f socialism: the first historical, to give a summary View of the course of socialistic thought in the last half century; the second expository, to set forth some of the tenets agreed on by the socialists quite gen erally; and the third critical, to indicate what should be the attitude toward the socialist claims and principles of those who, like us, are pledged to the doctrine of the su preme value of the ethical life. (Excerpt from The United States of America: Through the Ci...)
Excerpt from The United States of America: Through the Civil War As a succession of happenings the past, even the most recent past, is forever gone. It is as far beyond our reach as the moons of Jupiter. It is behind our back, too. The entire and increasing work of our life is the unceasing creation of a future with our present materials - as in the case of the traveler who lays the corduroy road ahead of him log by log. Because our present material is the heritage of the long past, that past has eternal significance in determining. The direction of the road which we lay. Such is the spirit in which this book has been written. Its subject is the development of the American ideal of democracy. David S. Muzzey was born on October 9, 1870, in Lexington, Massachusetts. He was the son of David W. Muzzey, a real estate broker, and of Annie Woodbury Saville.
Muzzey attended the Boston Latin School and entered Harvard in 1889. After graduation in 1893, he taught mathematics at Robert College in Constantinople until 1894. He then returned to the United States and enrolled at Union Theological Seminary, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Divinity in 1897. Subsequently he studied at the University of Berlin (1897 - 1898) under Adolf von Harnack and Herman Gencke and at the Sorbonne (1898 - 1899). It was during these years that he turned away from formal religion as a field of study and as a matter of personal commitment, taking up history and ethical culture instead.
In 1900 Muzzey had become associated with the Ethical Culture School in New York City, and maintained an interest in that society for many years, both as a teacher of Latin and Greek (1900 - 1903) and as a director.
He joined the faculty at Columbia in 1905, teaching first at Barnard. Simultaneously, he pursued graduate work in history and received the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1907. He became a member of the graduate faculty in 1923.
Muzzey lectured at the University of Chicago (1907), the University of California at Los Angeles and at Berkeley, and the University of London. He lectured widely on ethical culture and consistently expressed the view that the future of mankind lay in the development of moral qualities. Accordingly he considered moral qualities necessary for an understanding of history. His stress on the importance of the individual, even in his general treatments of the American past, made the place of morality and right conduct a recurring point of reference.
In 1927, Muzzey was a member of an educational mission sent to Rumania by the Carnegie Endowment; ten years later he was Carnegie lecturer at the universities of Prague, Paris, and Edinburgh.
In 1938 he was named the first holder of the Gouverneur Morris chair of American history at Columbia. He retired two years later.
Muzzey also lectured at the University of Chicago (1907), the University of California at Los Angeles and at Berkeley, and the University of London. He served as a member of the editorial board of American Observer, a weekly for high school teachers of American history, from 1914, and as an advisory editor of Current History from 1937 to 1945. He died on April 14, 1965 in Yonkers, New York.
