Member of the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh. F.S.A.Scot.; House Surgeon Dundee Inlirmary, 1866. Assistant surgeon His (or Her) Majesty Convict Prisons, Portland, Woking, and Mill bank, 1867-1873.
Senior medical officer Portsmouth Prison, 1873-1876. Department Superintendent Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum, 1876-1886. Superintendent 1886-1896.
Is medical adviser to Home Secretary in criminal mental cases. Was a member of Home Office Departmental Committee on Habitual Drunkards, 1891 - 92, and of Irish Governmental Committee of Inquiry into Dundrum Criminal Lunatic Asylum, 1891. President of Medico - Psychological Association of Great Britain and Ireland, 1895-1896.
President Irish Departmental Committee on Insanity among Convicts, 1904. Member of Society Medical Psychol. Paris and Belgium. Lord Chancellor’s Visitor in Lunacy since 1896.
