David came to the United States in 1956.
In 1932, David received a Master of Arts from the University of Edinburgh and a Doctor of Divinity in 1956.
During World War II Read served as Chaplain to the 51st Highland Division of the British Army. He then became the first Chaplain of the University of Edinburgh in 1949 - 1955 and "Chaplain to Her Majesty the Queen in Scotland" in 1952 - 1956. He was Senior Minister of Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church from 1956 until his retirement December 31, 1989, and Pastor Emeritus until his death January 7, 2001.
David Haxton Carswell Read authored a number of works aimed at linking modern-day issues with biblical parables, and his first book, The Spirit of Life, was published in 1939. His Prisoners’ Quest came in 1944 and was followed by the 1952 Communication of the Gospel. Some of Read’s later works include Go and Make Disciples from 1978, and Faith Is Still There, from 1981.
