Early 1890’s began revol work in Odessa as Populist. 1889, while abroad, became a Marxist. 1891 arrested and spent five years in prison, then three years in exile in Kishinev.
Then went abroad; 1901 began lit work. 1900 founded his own small independent Social-Democratic group entitled “Struggle”. 1903, after 2nd Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Congress, sided with Mensheviks.
1905-1907 worked in Odessa, then Saint St. Petersburg. Active in trade-union work and in Social-Democratic faction, State Duma. 1907 arrested and detained for a while, then went abroad.
Did research in libraries abroad and wrote on Marxism, Socialism and history of the workers’ movement for Russian and German journals. On behalf of German Social-Democratic Party, prepared for press an ed of Marx and Engels’ works. During World War 1 adopted centrist stand and worked for newspapers “Golos” and “Nashe slovo”.
After 1917 February Revol returned to Russia and joined Mezhrayontsy (organisation of revol internationalists). July 1917 joined Russian Social-Democratic Workers ’Party (Bolsheviks) together with other Mezhrayontsy. After 1917 October Revol advocated formation of coalition government comprising Social-Democrats and Socialist-Revolutionaries.
1918 resigned from Party over Bret Peace Treaty issue, but later reinstated in Party. During trade-union controversy sided with Trotsky. Removed from trade-union work.
Founded Socialist (from 1929 Communist) Academy. 1922 founded Institute of Marx and Engels. Member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics and All-Russian Central Executive Committee.
From 1929 member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. September 1920— May 1928 member, Commission for Collating and Studying Material on the History of the October Revol and the History of the Communist Party: February 1931 expelled from All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) “for directly abetting the Menshevik interventionists and betraying the Party”. Also dismissed as director, Institute of Marx and Engels.
12 March 1931 “Pravda” accused him of concealing the original of Marx’s letter about Kautzky. In the 23 February 1931 “indictment of the counterrevol Menshevik organisation” Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic Public Prosecutor Krylenko had accused him of concealing secret documents of the Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party (Mensheviks) Foreign Delegation at the Institute of Marx and Engels. Arrested by State Security organs.
