David Sanjek was born on September 3, 1952, in New York City, New York, United States. He was the son of a noted jazz collector, music industry historian and long-time executive at BMI Russell Sanjek.
Sanjek received his bachelor's degree in English and Philosophy from Connecticut College in 1974 and his master's degree and a doctorate in Literature from Washington University in St Louis in 1979 and 1985, respectively.
Sanjek spent his pre-academic years as an influential and popular youth leader at the Farm & Wilderness summer camps and associated educational programs situated in and around Plymouth, Vermont. He then served as a Director of the Archives at Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) between 1991 and 2007 and was considered to be a world expert in this field.
During his last years of life, Sanjek held the position of a Professor of Popular Music and Director of the University of Salford Music Research Centre in Salford, Greater Manchester, England.
David Sanjek was a recognized authority on music archiving, who published widely on Popular Music, Film, Media Studies, Copyright Law and Popular Culture.
Sanjek is particularly known as the author of 2 books, Pennies from Heaven: The American Popular Music Business in the Twentieth Century and The American Popular Music Business in the 20th Century.
