Career
The battle was the decisive engagement of Major General Philip Sheridan’s Valley Campaigns of 1864 and was the largest battle fought in the Shenandoah Valley. Scofield enlisted in the Army from Stamford, Connecticut in October 1861, and was assigned to the 5th New York Cavalry as a Sergeant. He was promoted to regimental Quartermaster Sergeant in July 1864, and mustered out with his regiment in July 1865.
