Background
He was prominent at two synods of the Welsh Church, and was consecrated Bishop of Menevia. Little else historical is known about him, the great legend that grew up around him being entirely unreliable. It became generally believed that his missionary labors among the British were widespread, that he founded monasteries, and that he transferred his episcopal see to the site of the present St. David's, with its fine medieval cathedral, in Pembrokeshire. On St. David's Day, March 1, the Welsh traditionally wear a leek, which commemorates a battle wherein Welsh warriors on David's suggestion wore this mark in order to distinguish themselves from their Saxon opponents.
