David Twiston-Davies began his career as a journalist at the East Anglian Daily Times, where he served from 1966 to 1968. From 1968 to 1970, he worked at the Winnipeg Free Press.
David entered the Daily Telegraph in London in 1970 as its news editor until 1977. He held the post of an assistant literary editor until 1986, becoming a deputy obituary editor. He worked there as a letters editor in 1987-88, editor of Peterborough column in 1988-89, letters editor in 1989-91, finally being appointed chief obituary writer. During his time at the Telegraph, he has edited the Peterborough diary and the letters column when he lived in Royal Tunbridge Wells, home of the legendary letter-writer, Disgusted.
As deputy to the late Hugh Massingberd, when the paper did much to make obituaries an important feature throughout the Commonwealth Twiston-Davies helped to establish the obituaries column with a set place in the paper every day, concentrating his efforts on the Empire and the two world wars.
The Daily Telegraph obituary section, under Twiston Davies, became journalistic matter worthy of a collection, so following his lifelong interest, Twiston Davies compiled Canada from Afar: The Daily Telegraph Book of Canadian Obituaries that was published in 1996, The Daily Telegraph Book of Letters in 1998, The Daily Telegraph Book of Airmen's Obituaries in 2005 and The Daily Telegraph Military Obituaries: Book 2, foreword by John Keegan in 2006.
