George Tyrrell was dismissed from the Society of Jesus and excommunicated twenty-six years after his conversation to Roman Catholicism. It was a personal tragedy of enormous proportions, yet what happened to Tyrrell was but a small part of what happened to the entire church during the anti-modernist campaign, a struggle foretold by Tyrrell and one that swept the church of many of its most gifted intellectuals. The present study dwells on Tyrrell's most productive years, the time when he was attempting, as he put it, to construct an ark against the flood, a modus vivendi for the survival of the intelligent Catholic in a church that was reacting defensively to the onrush of the modern world. As such, it portrays Tyrrell's search for what is truly catholic about Catholicism; it details his distinctive effort toward formulating a statement of traditional beliefs in the categories of the new era, the development of a new apologetic in keeping with new perspectives in historical and philosophical inquiry.

The underlying contention of this study is that, since Catholic Modernism was defined not by the so-called modernists but by the anti-modernists, to understand it one must understand the anti-modernist (or integralist) mind. Schultenover argues that, since Catholic Modernism was defined not by modernists but by the anti-modernists, to understand it one must understand the anti-modernist (or integralist) mind.
