Feingold, David Sidney was born on November 15, 1922 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, United States. Son of Louis Edward and Miriam (Young) Feingold.
In 1944 he graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor"s degree in chemistry. In 1949 he moved to Israel and studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 1956 he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Following receipt of his Doctor of Philosophy he returned to the United States and served as a research assistant at the University of California from 1956 to 1960.
