Stanley, David Sloane was born on June 1, 1828 in at Chester, Ohio, United States. Son of John B. and Sarah (Peterson) Stanley.

Commanded 4th corps, Army of the Cumberland, and took part in many battles, notably in the fights in and around Corinth and the battles of the Atlanta campaign and until he was severely wounded at Franklin in a desperate hand-to-hand conflict. Was active in the engagements around Nashville.
After war was colonel 22d United States infantry and brigadier general United States of America. Brigadier general United States of America, retired June 1, 1892.
