Excerpt from The Care and Culture of Men: A Series of Addresses This volume is made up of addresses relating to higher education, delivered at different times before assemblies of teachers and students. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The present volume is made up of popular essays or addresses on the general subject ofO rganic Evolution. These were originally given as oral lectures before University Extension societies inC alifornia, having been condensed and written out in their present form after delivery. Three of these papers have already appeared in Appletons Popular Science Monthly, and three inT he A rena. To the editors of these periodicals I am indebted for the privilege of reprinting them. Besides the twelve essays of my own, it is my good fortune to enhance the value of the volume by the insertion of three papers of special importance, setting forth the present state of knowledge concerning the method of evolution and the method of heredity. The first of these, on the Factors ofO rganic Evolution as displayed in the Process of Development, is by Professor Edwin Grant Conklin, of the University of Pennsylvania ;the second, on the Physical Basis of Heredity, is by Professor Frank Mace McF arland, of Leland Stanford Jr. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

(Excerpt from The Strength of Being Morally: Clean a Study...)
Excerpt from The Strength of Being Morally: Clean a Study of the Quest for Unearned Happiness It is one of the laws of life that each acquisition has its cost. No organism can exercise power without yielding up part of its substance. The physiological law of transfer of energy is the basis of human success and happiness. There is no action without expenditure of energy, and if energy be not expended, the power to generate it is lost. This law shows itself in a thousand ways in the life of man. The arm which is not used becomes palsied. The wealth which comes by chance weakens and destroys. The good which is unused turns to evil. The charity which asks no effort "cannot relieve the misery she creates." The religion which another man would give us we cannot take as a gift. There is no Christliness without endeavour. The truth which another man has won from nature or from life is not our truth until we have lived it. Only that becomes real or helpful to any man which has cost the sweat of his brow, the effort of his brain, or the anguish of his soul. He who would be wise must daily earn his wisdom. The parable of the talents is the expression of this law, for he who adds not effort to power soon loses the power he had. The responsibility for effort rests with the individual. This need is the meaning of individuality, and by it each must work out his own salvation, with fear and trembling it may be sometimes, and all times with perseverance and patience. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: ... whitefish inhabiting the mountain pools and lakes, the trout ascending all brooks and rapids in search of their fountainheads. In many cases the ultimate dividing ridge is not very broad, and we may imagine that at some time spawn or even young fishes may have been carried across by birds or other animals, or by man, or more likely by the dash of some summer whirlwind. Once carried across in favorable circumstances, the species might survive and spread. The following is an example of how such transfer of species may be accomplished, which shows that we need not be left to draw on the imagination to invent possible means of transit. The Suletind.--There are few watersheds in the world better defined than the mountain range which forms the "backbone" of Norway. I lately climbed a peak in this range, the Suletind. From its summit I could look down into the valleys of the Lara and the Bagna, flowing in opposite directions to opposite sides of the peninsula. To the north of the Suletind is a large double lake called the Sletningenvand. The maps shew this lake to be one of the chief sources of the westward-flowing river Lara. This lake is in August swollen by the melting of the snows, and at the time of my visit it was visibly the source of both these rivers. From its southeastern side flowed a large brook into the valley of'the Bagna, and from its southwestern corner, equally distinctly, came the waters which fed the Lara. This lake, like similar mountain ponds in all northern countries, abounds in trout; and these trout certainly have for part of the year an uninterrupted line of water communication from the Sognefjord on the west of Norway to the Christianiafjord on the southeast,--from the North Sea to the Baltic. I chthyology. In general all traits of the fish are discussed, those which the fish shares with other animals most briefly, those which relate to the evolution of the group and the divergence ofj its various classes and orders most fully The extinct forms are restored to their place in the series and discussed along with those still extant. In general, the writer has drawn on his own experience as an ichthyologist, and with this on all the literature of the science. Special obligations are recognized in the text. To Dr. Charles H. A mong the inalienable rights of man as our fathers have taught us are these three: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. So long as man is alive and free, he will, in one way or another, seek that which gives him pleasure, hence life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are in essence the same. But the pursuit of happiness is an art in itself. To seek it is not necessarily to find it, and failure may destroy both liberty and life. Of some phases of this pursuit I wish to speak to-day. My message is an old one. If by good chance some part of it is true, this truth is as old as life itself. And if it be true, it is a message that needs to be repeated many times to each generation of men. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Excerpt from Imperial Democracy: A Study of the Relation of Government by the People, Equality Before the Law, and Other Tenets of Democracy, to the Demands of a Vigorous Foreign Policy and Other Demands of Imperial Dominion The present volume contains eight addresses bearing on the policy of the United States, especially concerning the war with Spain and its results. The first address "Lest We Forget," was delivered May 25th, l898, on the occasion of the graduation of the Class of 1898, in the Leland Stanford Junior University. As this address has in a sense a historical value, being one of the very first of many of its kind, it is here published exactly as delivered with the change of a word or two only and the omission of a brief quotation. The second address, "Colonial Expansion," delivered before the Congress of Religions at Omaha in October, 1898, is here modified by the omission of a few passages which were used also on the previous occasion. The third address, "A Blind Man's Holiday," was read on February 14th, 1899, before the Graduate Club of Leland Stanford Junior University, and afterwards repeated before the congregation of Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco and the Berkeley Club in Oakland. It was reprinted for general circulation under the title of "The Question of the Philippines," by the courtesy of Mr. John J. Valentine, who has also published a similar edition of "Lest We Forget." The essay on the "Colonial Lessons of Alaska" was delivered before the University Extension Club of San JosE; that on the "Lessons of the Paris Tribunal," before the Congregationalist Club in San Francisco. The essay on "A Continuing City" was delivered before the New Charter Association of San Francisco. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.

(Excerpt from Animal Forms: A Text-Book of Zoology The pr...)
Excerpt from Animal Forms: A Text-Book of Zoology The present volume is designed to meet the needs of the beginning student of zoology. Accordingly, technical and scientific names have been avoided as far as possible, and those used are fully explained in the text or elsewhere. The opening chapters deal with the characteristics of living things, and, in contrasting animals and plants, attempt to bring into relief the distinguishing marks of all animals. Then follows a discussion of the cell and protoplasm, preparing the way for the examination of a series of animals representative of each of the great groups, from the simplest to the most complex. These are considered from the view-point of structure; but considerable attention is also paid to the functions of their parts, to their habits and life-history, so that while the representatives examined are, for the sake of simplicity, relatively few in number, they are, it is believed, thoroughly typical. Hence, with a knowledge of the facts presented, the student should have a broad view of the animal kingdom, and a foundation on which to base future study and observation. It is perhaps unnecessary to add that from the study of books alone no one can really make such knowledge his own. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ...the appearance of a small dragon-fly, lays its eggs in light sandy soil. In this the resulting larvae excavate funnel-shaped pits, at the bottom of which they lie con cealed. Insects stumbling into their pitfalls are pelted with sand, which the ant-lion throws at them with a jerky motion of the head, and are speedily tumbled down the shifting sidee of the funnel to be seized and devoured. While the white ants are not in any way related to the true ants, they possess many similar habits. Associated in great companies, they excavate winding galleries in old logs and stumps, and, further, are most interesting because of the division of labor among the various members. The wingless forms are divided into the workers, which excavate, care for the young, and otherwise labor for the good of the others; and into the soldiers, huge-headed forms, Fig. 72.--Ant-lion larva plowing its way through the sand (upper figure) while another is commencing the excavation of a funnel-shaped pit similar to one on right. Photograph by A. L. Melandeb and C. T. Bbues. whose strong jaws serve to protect the colony. The remaining winged forms are the kings and queens. In the spring many of the royalty fly away from home, shed their wings, unite in pairs, and set about to organize a colony. The queen rapidly commences to develop eggs, and in some species her body becomes so enormously distended with these that she loses the power of locomotion and requires to be fed. A single queen has been known to lay eggs at the rate of sixty per minute (eighty thousand a day), and FiG. 73.--Termites or white ants, a, queen; 6, winged male; c, worker; d, soldier. those destined to royal rank are so nursed that they advance farther in their development than the remaining sterile...
