David Tappan Stoddard

Stoddard, David Tappan was born on December 2, 1818 in Northampton, Massachusetts, United States. Son of Soloman and Sarah (Tappan) Stoddard.

Education

Attended Williams College, 1834. Graduated from Yale, 1838, studied theology at Yale, 1840-1842. Attended Andover Theological Seminary, 1839.

Career

Tutor, Marshall and Middlebury Colleges, 1838-1839. Theology tutor Yale, 1840-1842. Licensed to preach by Congregationalist Church Massachusetts, 1842, ordained minister New Haven, Connecticut, 1843.

Missionary (under auspices American Board Commissioners for Foreign Missions) among Nestorians, Persia, 1843-1848, 51-57, headed school for boys Seir, Persia, preached among Nestorians.

In charge of Dayspring and Journal of Missions, publications of America Board Commissioners for Foreign Missions, 1848. Translator: (with Review Justin Perkins) New Testament into modern Syriac.

Author: Grammar of the Modern Syriac. Language published in Journal of Oriental Society) 1855-1856.
