From the turn of the century to the end of World War I, German-Americans were among the most politically active ethnic groups in the US.Within the framework of the National German-American Alliance, German-Americans worked to protect their heritage. By focusing on the local chapters of the Alliance in St. Louis and other Missouri cities and towns, Detjen explains the origins of the organization as an opponent of the prohibition movement and traces German-American involvement in social and political causes.
