(In spite of large rivers, countless muskegs and large for...)
In spite of large rivers, countless muskegs and large forested hills en route to the Peace River Country, people came in droves to settle. Between 1910 and 1914, over 2500 applications for homestead were filed, while numerous communities were begun. In illustration of text, The Lure of the Peace River Country depicts the saga of these people. It highlights the enthusiastic, and sometimes the dubious, publicity and promotion of the region, the tenacious individuals who answered the call, and the gruelling experience of travelling to the region. This book was researched in archives throughout Canada. It includes 170 archival and contemporary colour photos, many of which have never been published. Original maps and many unpublished diaries, letters and other original sources have also been used to provide a revealing and engaging account of the early development of one of the last frontier regions in North America.
