Australian high commissioner to Ghana, 1974-1977. Ambassador to Senegal, 1974-1977, Ivory Coast, 1975-1977. Spokesman, Canberra, 1977-1980.

1st assistant secretary for Europe, Americas and New Zealand, 1980. Ambassador to Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics and Mongolia, 1981-1984. High commissioner to Malaysia, since 1984.

Rhodes scholar, 1957.
