Dean Allen Porter was born on June 13, 1939, in Gouverneur, New York, United States, to Arnold W. Porter and Gertrude V. Porter.
In 1961, Porter received a Bachelor of Arts, in 1966, he also received a Master of Arts in art history and a Ph.D. in 1974 from the State University of New York in Binghamton.
From 1966 to 1994, Dean Porter was an associate professor at the University of Notre Dame. In 1994, he became a full professor there and retired in 2001. Porter also worked at The Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame as the curator from 1966 to 1974, and its director from 1974 to 1999.
Dr. Porter has been a Samuel H. Kress Fellow, has lectured all over the United States, and has numerous publications to his credit. His recent research has been focused on the Taos Art Colony and in 1990 he published Victor Higgins: An American Master. Dr. Porter spearheaded the nationally touring exhibition, Taos Art and Their Patrons and co-authored the accompanying book by the same title.

1980Porter was a member of the College Art Association, American Association of Museums, Association of Art Museum Directors. He also was a member of the board of directors at Southwest Art History Council, member of museum council at Harwood Foundation, member of an advisory council at Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art, member of the advisory board at Indiana University Art Museum and member of the national advisory council at Valparaiso Museum of Art.
Dean Porter's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from $125 USD to $4,000 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. Since 2016 the record price for this artist at auction is $4,000 USD for Taos Pueblo Rain Storm, sold at Austin Auction Gallery in 2019.
On July 27, 1963, Porter married Carol DuBrava. He has two daughters: Kellie Ann and Tracie Ann Porter.
