Background
Tannen, Deborah Frances was born on June 7, 1945 in Brooklyn. Daughter of Eli S. and Dorothy (Rosen) Tannen.
(This revised edition of Deborah Tannen's first discourse ...)
This revised edition of Deborah Tannen's first discourse analysis book, Conversational Style-first published in 1984-presents an approach to analyzing conversation that later became the hallmark and foundation of her extensive body of work in discourse analysis, including the monograph Talking Voices, as well as her well-known popular books You Just Don't Understand, That's Not What I Meant!, and Talking from 9 to 5, among others. Carefully examining the discourse of six speakers over the course of a two-and-a-half hour Thanksgiving dinner conversation, Tannen analyzes the features that make up the speakers' conversational styles, and in particular how aspects of what she calls a 'high-involvement style' have a positive effect when used with others who share the style, but a negative effect with those whose styles differ. This revised edition includes a new preface and an afterword in which Tannen discusses the book's place in the evolution of her work. Conversational Style is written in an accessible and non-technical style that should appeal to scholars and students of discourse analysis (in fields like linguistics, anthropology, communication, sociology, and psychology) as well as general readers fascinated by Tannen's popular work. This book is an ideal text for use in introductory classes in linguistics and discourse analysis.

(Written in readable, vivid, non-technical prose, this boo...)
Written in readable, vivid, non-technical prose, this book, first published in 2007, presents the highly respected scholarly research that forms the foundation for Deborah Tannen's best-selling books about the role of language in human relationships. It provides a clear framework for understanding how ordinary conversation works to create meaning and establish relationships. A significant theoretical and methodological contribution to both linguistic and literary analysis, it uses transcripts of tape-recorded conversation to demonstrate that everyday conversation is made of features that are associated with literary discourse: repetition, dialogue, and details that create imagery. This second edition features a new introduction in which the author shows the relationship between this groundbreaking work and the research that has appeared since its original publication in 1989. In particular, she shows its relevance to the contemporary topic 'intertextuality', and provides a useful summary of research on that topic.

(Lilika Nakos (1899-1988) was one of the first women write...)
Lilika Nakos (1899-1988) was one of the first women writers of modern Greek prose and for many years the only woman in Greek journalism. She was a member of the Generation of the Thirties, a group of writers who forged a modern novel in Greek. A study of Nakos' work is needed for an understanding of modern Greek literature. Moreover, it is needed to open the way for in-depth studies of women's contributions to modern Greek prose. The first chapter introduces Nakos as Deborah Tannen knew her and sketches her life, including the circumstances of the writing of her major works and the themes that pervade them. The second chapter surveys her short stories. The remaining chapters discuss her major books in the order in which they were published, with a final chapter giving an overview of her work and its development over half a century.

(As the author did when discussing men's and women's tende...)
As the author did when discussing men's and women's tendencies to adopt different conversational styles in "You Just Don't Understand", Tannen is careful in this book to emphasize that not all men follow typically masculine patterns of conversation, and not all women follow typically feminine patterns. Based on research and interviews, and written with humour, Tannen aims to encourage both women and men to learn from different styles of conversation at work, and to show people how to interpret conversational signals and thereby open up new opportunities for postive exchange and development.

(This collection of papers by linguists, with contribution...)
This collection of papers by linguists, with contributions from anthropology, sociology, English, and education, provides theoretical and empirical analyses of discourse to examine cohesion. Authors analyze discourse produced in a variety of settings, including chapters focusing on cross-cultural differences; children's use of language in and out of school; and the relationship between music and language. These papers deepen our understanding of features that typify spoken and written discourse and further the demonstration, begun in the collection Spoken and Written Language: Exploring Orality and Literacy, that orality and literacy are complex and intertwined. Discourse structures and processes are dynamic patterns growing out of communicative goals which cut across spoken and written modes.

Your project went off without a hitch--but somebody else got the credit...You averted a crisis brilliantly--but no one noticed...You came to the meeting with a sensational idea--but it was ignored until someone else said the same thing... HOW CAN YOU GET CREDIT & GET AHEAD? In her extraordinary international bestseller, You Just Don't Understand, Deborah Tannen transformed forever the way we look at intimate relationships between women and men. Now she turns her keen ear and observant eye toward the workplace--where the ways in which men and women communicate can determine who gets heard, who gets ahead, and what gets done. An instant classic, Talking From 9 to 5 brilliantly explains women's and men's conversational rituals--and the language barriers we unintentionally erect in the business world. It is a unique and invaluable guide to recognizing the verbal power games and miscommunications that cause good work to be underappreciated or go unnoticed--an essential tool for promoting more positive and productive professional relationships among men and women.

(As discourse analysis has turned linguistic attention to ...)
As discourse analysis has turned linguistic attention to texts, it is crucial to understand the relationship between various kinds of texts. Spoken vs. written modes constitute one of the basic distinguishing characteristics of texts and is a natural stepping-off point for such an inquiry. Furthermore, all the issues of applied linguisticshow language affects and is used in everyday interaction, education, and various special settingswill be enlightened by an understanding of 1) the relationship of spoken to written language, and 2) how language attitudes and conventions associated with orality and literacy influence discourse. This volume addresses these issues of discourse analysis and embodies two crucial features that have characterized much recent work in this area. It is broadly interdisciplinary, including research in anthropology, psychology, and literature as well as linguistics, which is at the core. And it is deeply humanistic, looking at language always in context and as a human endeavor. The authors of these collected papers demonstrate that complexities found in discourse in context reflect not only its spoken or written mode but its interactive goals and structures: genre, register, and speech event all play significant roles. A number of the chapters consider the relationship of literary to conversational language and find them closer, and distinctions between them foggier, than had previously been thought. Finally, we have a view of individuals and societies caught in changing traditions of orality and literacy intertwined with each other and with chirography, print, and technology.

(Are your words working for you? You say something at a ...)
Are your words working for you? You say something at a meeting and it is ignored; then when someone else says the same thing, everyone embraces it as a marvelous idea. You devote yourself to a project, but don't get credit for the results. You give what you think are clear instructions, but the job is not done, or done wrong. Sometimes it seems you are not being heard, not getting credit for your efforts, not getting ahead as fast as you should. Now, Deborah Tannen brings to the workplace the same voice, eye, and insight that made "That's Not What I Meant!" and "You Just Don't Understand" bestselling classics. In "Talking From 9 to 5", she explores the special world of work-- where we spend countless hours with people we may not understand or even like, and where the way we talk determines not only how we get the job done, but how we are evaluated for our efforts. Offering powerful new ways of understanding what happens in the workplace, from the simplest exchanges to the complex contemporary issues of the glass ceiling, Tannen explains a variety of conversational styles and reveals how each of us can develop the flexibility and understanding we need. Since the publication of "You Just Don't Understand", Tannen has been told over and over, "Your book saved my marriage". "Talking From 9 to 5" will have the same dramatic impact on those who are struggling with co-workers, jobs, and companies, and will help entire companies as well as individual women and men thrive in a working world made up of increasingly diverse workforces and ever-more competitive markets.

This book focuses attention on a relatively neglected component of communication-silence-in order to present current research from a number of disciplines and also to stimulate further research on the subject. Silence is often viewed as an out-of-awareness phenomenon against which talk is perceived. By reversing polarities and treating silence as a figure to be examined against talk, we are given a heightened awareness of the universal aspects of human behavior while emphasizing its complex nature as a cultural phenomenon.
