She is counted as one of the symbols of the revolution. Dédée Bazile was born a slave and followed the army of Dessalines as a peddler. She was a fanatic admirer of Dessalines, and after his death, she gathered his remains in a sack and transported them to Cimetière Intérieur in Portuguese-au-Prince to bury them.
Dédée Bazile is regarded as one of the heroines of the revolution.
