The propounder of the theory that Francis Bacon wrote Shakespeare's plays.
Background
After a year in Catherine Beecher's school in Hartford, Conn., she taught in several private schools. In 1853 she went to England, seeking evidence for her theory that a coterie of wits, Francis Bacon being the leading mind, were the real authors of Shakespeare's plays. Her book on this subject, The Philosophy of the Plays of Shakspere Unfolded, was published in 1857.
Education
Attended Catharine Beecher’s school, Hartford, Connecticut, 1817-1826.
Career
With an elder sister tried unsuccessfully to establish schools in Southington, Connecticut, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, Jamaica, New York, for 4 years. Began writing books and delivering lectures. Became convinced that William Shakespeare’s plays were written by a literary group (Francis Bacon, Walter Raleigh, Edmund Spenser) to further their political philosophies, 1852.
Went to England to study this theory, encouraged by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Lived in shabby surroundings in London, England., for 3 years. Made friends with Nathaniel Hawthorne, London.
Borrowed money from Hawthorne to publish a book, but her mind began to fail. Felt that proof of her theory could be found in Shakespeare’s tomb, made plans to have tomb opened, 1856. Also believed proof might be found in tombs of Bacon, Spenser or Raleigh.
Became insane, was taken home by her nephew, George Bacon, 1858. 1st to try to discredit the writings of Shakespeare.
