He was trained in architecture in the office of Mr. Whitestone’ later advanced to the position of draftsman, when Mr. Whitestone passed away, succeeded to his practice. The partnership with his brother, James C. was formed in 1890, and in after years the firm became one of the leading architectural offices in the city en¬gaged in a large and successful practice. Among the noted buildings in the city was the Church and Rectory of St. Boniface Monastery, 1890: Jefferson County Jail, 1902; City Hos-pital, 1911; German Bank, 1913 (now a branch of the Federal Reserve Bank); Annex to the Kentucky Home Life Insurance Building, and additions after 1923 to the Federal Reserve Bank.
The Murphy Brothers also planned factories and other buildings for the American Tobacco Plant between 1893 and 1930; for the Sunnybrook Distillery, 1901-03; for the Churchill Downs Race Track, 1894-1933 and buildings for the Lincoln Fields Race Track at Crete, Illinois.
He was a charter member of the old Louisville Chapter, and continued his affiliation with the present Kentucky Chapter, A.I. A. until his death.
