( A major historical document, this book contains intervi...)
A major historical document, this book contains interviews with more than 150 Germans who witnessed, participated in, or resisted the rise of Adolph Hitler. The testimony comes from well-known figures like Manfred Rommel and Helmut Kohl; former soldiers and ordinary civilians; and victims of the criminal policies of the Nazi regime. Haunting and extraordinary tales of horror, courage, grim determination, and moral confusion fill these pages. Voices from the Third Reich takes the material of epic history and presents it in the form of the individual human experiences of men, women, and children subjected to the pressures of total war in a fascist state.

( The battle of Tannenberg (August 27–30, 1914) opened Wo...)
The battle of Tannenberg (August 27–30, 1914) opened World War I with a decisive German victory over Russia—indeed the Kaiser’s only clear-cut victory in a non-attritional battle during four years of war. In this first paperback edition of the classic work, historian Dennis Showalter analyzes this battle’s causes, effects, and implications for subsequent German military policy. The author carefully guides the reader through what actually happened on the battlefield, from its grand strategy down to the level of improvised squad actions. Examining the battle in the context of contemporary diplomatic, political, and economic affairs, Showalter also reviews both armies’ social settings and military doctrine, and shows how the battle may be understood as a case study of problems that military organizations face in the initial stages of a major war. In addition, he demolishes many myths about the battle, such as the supposed superiority of the German military, the animosity among Russian field commanders, and the assumption that the Germans viewed their opponents as a horde of uniformed illiterates. Tannenberg’s mystique later served the Weimar Republic and Third Reich propagandists. For years its legends helped to shape German nationalist ideology and military policy. In 1941, Hitler’s Wehrmacht grossly underestimated Soviet military capability, leading to disaster in World War II.

(Railroads and Rifles is a lucid and deeply researched acc...)
Railroads and Rifles is a lucid and deeply researched account of the interaction of three key factors in the unification of Germany - the growth of the railways and their relationship with war, and the development of the breech-loading rifle and Krupp's rifled cannon. When this book first appeared almost forty years ago, a gulf had developed between the study of war making in its operational contexts, and war's wider aspects. Social, economic, cultural, political issues were the themes of a "new military history" that at times excluded combat as a matter of principle. Railroads and Rifles was intended to reassert the synergies between war at its sharp end and war as it impacted the societies that armed forces reflected and represented. The ideas it introduces, the questions it raises, remain vital in a new century. The original edition, keenly sought by scholars and researchers, has been out of print and hard-to-find for many years. This edition is much more than a straight reprint, featuring a thorough new introduction by the author and new maps.

(The campaigns of Frederick the Great were more than the a...)
The campaigns of Frederick the Great were more than the apogee of eighteenth-century warfare: as Dennis Showalter argues in this stimulating book which sets them in their full context, they were a watershed in the history of Europe. They inaugurated a new pattern -- of total war for limited objectives -- that was to endure until 1916. Frederick's battles were designed to convince his adversaries of the wisdom not just of making peace but also of keeping it; for him, victory in the field was the means to the more enduring victory of a successful negotiation, and, as such, his wars prefigure those of Napoleon.
