He attended Clovis East High School in Clovis, California and played college golf at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he was a four-time All-American and was twice named Mountain West Conference player of the year. Ernst made his professional debut at the 2012 Frys.com Open, where he finished T-41. He finished T-59 in his season debut at the Sony Open in Hawaii.
He earned his first Professional Golf Association Tour victory at the 2013 Wells Fargo Championship. He was runner-up at the 2011 United States.
