He graduated with a Bachelor Honours in Film & Media Studies from University of Stirling in 1997, then worked with a freelance press agency in Stirling before joining the Scottish Daily Express in 2000.

In 2002, he was appointed as Editor of the Scottish edition of the Sunday Express in Glasgow. In 2000, he was given a Scottish Society of Editors Newcomer of the Year award. Lambie"s Scottish Sunday Express ran a story criticising the behaviour of the survivors of the Dunblane massacre.
Following complaints made to the PCC about the Express" abuse of privacy and an online campaign, Lambie printed an apology.
However the PCC said "the breach of the code was so serious that no apology could remedy lieutenant".
