He was elected as a Teachta Dála (Territorial Decoration) for the Galway West constituency at the 2011 general election, He failed to hold his seat in the 2016 general election. He was a trainee solicitor when he contested the 2011 general election. He was nominated to succeed Labour Party president Michael Doctorate. Higgins in the election to Dáil Éireann, in Galway West as a first time candidate.
He lost his seat at the 2016 general election and has decided that he now has to " get a job".
He was a member of the Dáil Public Accounts Committee.
