Partner, Keener Oil Corporation, Tulsa, 1951-1971. President Dewey Supply Company (Oklahoma), 1953-1956. Owner-operator ranch in Wagoner County (Oklahoma), 1958-1964, in Tulsa County, from 1958, in Delaware County, from 1968.

Member Oklahoma Senate from Tulsa County, 1962-1966. Governor of Oklahoma, 1967-1971. Then United States senator until 1979.
