Crispell was born on December 24, 1959 in Peekskill, New York, United States; the daughter of Alf Henning Haggblom and Janet Marian (Haber) Haggblom.
Crispell received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Cornell University in 1981.
Crispell began her career as a research assistant at the United States Census Bureau in 1982. Two years later she took a position of a research associate at the same bureau. Then in 1986 Diane was appointed an associate editor and associate national editor in 1989 at the United States Census Bureau. Also she served as an executive editor at that bureau from 1992 to 1997. Since 1997 Crispell has been an editor-at-large at Roper Starch Worldwide Inc.

1993Crispell was a member of American Sociological Association, American Population Association and President's Council of Cornell Women.
On August 17, 1985 Diane Crispell married Claude Bert Crispell. They have 2 children.
