Diane Goode was born on January 14, 1949, in Brooklyn, New York, United States. She is a daughter of Armand R. and Paule (Guerrini) Capuozzo.
Diane Goode attended the National School of Fine Arts in France from 1971 to 1972. She also studied at Queens College where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1972.
Diane Goode started her career as a substitute teacher in New York City public schools. In 1975, she illustrated Christian Garrison's book Little Pieces of the West Wind. In 1976, Goode took up a post of a teacher of a studio workshop on children’s book illustration at the University of California, Los Angeles. She continued to produce illustrations for children's books such as The Selchie’s Seed, Flim and Flam and the Big Cheese, Tattercoats: An Old English Tale, When I Was Young in the Mountains and others. In 2014, she collaborated with journalist Cokie Roberts and illustrated Founding Mothers.
Goode began creating her own self-illustrated books in 1988 with the publication of I Hear a Noise. After launching her writing career, Goode began focusing much of her creative energy on anthologies. She wrote and illustrated volumes of folktales and silly stories such as Diane Goode's Book of American Folk Tales and Songs, Diane Goode's American Christmas and Diane Goode's Book of Silly Stories and Songs. Her latest book was published in 2018. Goode's work is represented at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Her most famous books are Diane Goode's Book of American Folk Tales and Songs, Cinderella: The Dog And Her Little Glass Slipper and Louise the Big Cheese. She illustrated over 60 children's books. In 1976 Goode received the Southern California Council on Literature for Children and Young People award for The Selchie’s Seed and Little Pieces of the West Wind. She also received the Caldecott honor book award and Parents’ Choice Award.
