(After surviving kidnapping and the loss of her father and...)
After surviving kidnapping and the loss of her father and grandparents, Dany is brought to America to escape the war in Europe. In New York City she is left with an aunt who has no time for her and a cousin who despises her. Growing up without a mother on the east side of Manhattan, she encounters humanity at its worst. Several times she narrowly escapes death. Believing her uncle’s prediction that “when we reach the lowest ebb, the tide will turn” and with her strong faith in God, she survives the poverty, the loneliness and the terrors of the big city. This is a story of two generations of Czech immigrants, their friends and the years leading up to and during World War II.

(Dany is sent on a mission to rescue a legacy for her fami...)
Dany is sent on a mission to rescue a legacy for her family. She has no idea where this mission will lead or what adventures she will encounter on her daring trip behind "the iron curtain." Diane Popek-Jones is in her element when recording history and its effects on people. From her friends and family who have lived through World War II and the Communist occupation, she brings you factual accounts of the horrors and the tragedies as told by the victims, her Czech cousins. This is the last part of the trilogy (a continuation of East of the Jagged Cross and Little Czech Immigrant) about the journey of the author's life.
