(The ROM Dance: A Range of Motion Exercise and Relaxation ...)
The ROM Dance: A Range of Motion Exercise and Relaxation Program is a unique medical model therapeutic system designed for people with pain and other physical limitations. "ROM" is the acronym for "Range of Motion" which are exercises that help keep the joints flexible. These movements, recommended by doctors and therapists, are combined with basic principles of T'ai Chi Ch'uan, an ancient Chinese exercise for health and longevity. The ROM Dance is an excellent resource for people with fibromyalgia, arthritis, lupus, and other painful, limiting conditions. It was created in 1981 at St. Marys Hospital Medical Center in Madison, WI. Initial development, research and creation of new versions and media was supported in part by grants from the Arthritis Foundation. The ROM Dance is performed while listening to relaxing music and a verse with images of water, light and friendship. Each version (Sunlight, Moonlight, and Seated) takes less than 10 minutes to perform. The book outlines instructions, precautions, suggestions, philosophy, guidelines and other information especially useful to instructors and therapists. Instructional videotapes are also available.
