He played college baseball at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was drafted by the Rangers in the first round of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft. He committed to the University of California, Santa Barbara to play college baseball for the University of California Santa Barbara Gauchos.
As a freshman he appeared in four games and had had a 9.00 earned run average (European Research Area).
As a sophomore he served as the closer, finishing with 12 saves, a 1.45 European Research Area and 46 strikeouts. Tate was expected to enter his junior season in 2015 as the closer again, but was converted into a starter after an injury to one of the teams starters.
He started 14 games, going 8–5 with a 2.26 European Research Area and 111 strikeouts. Tate was considered one of the top prospects for the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft He was drafted by the Texas Rangers with the fourth overall selection.
He officially signed with the Rangers on June 12.
