As a student at the Moscow Theological Academy, arrested and spent several years in the Gulag camps. Released, 1956. Continued his religious studies. Priest, 1960. Breaking a long established taboo, delivered simple sermons and made direct appeals to believers, followed by discussions.
Achieved great popularity, especially among the Soviet intelligentsia interested in religious questions. His sermons circulated in samizdat. Arrested 1979. Under Committee for State Security pressure, appeared on TV denouncing his former activity.
Released and given a parish in the provinces. Reviled by dissidents as a renegade, he defended his TV appearance as an act of humility.
