Dinesh Chandra Verma is an Indian computer scientist, researcher, writer, and IBM Fellow known for contributions to computer communication networks, policy-based networking, autonomic computing, wireless and mobile networks, network science, distributed analytics, Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence. He has authored technical books, published extensively, and holds numerous U.S. patents.
Background
Dinesh Chandra Verma was born in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, India, on November 16, 1965. His professional life has centered on computer communication networks and the application of artificial intelligence to the management of complex distributed systems. He has also collaborated with family members on bilingual books designed to teach Hindi to children growing up in the United States.
Education
Verma earned an undergraduate degree in technology from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1987. He subsequently completed a doctorate in computer networking and computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1991. He also earned a degree in Management of Technology from Polytechnic University, now part of New York University, with the qualification recorded as a Master of Science in Management of Technology.
Career
Verma joined IBM Research in 1992 and built a long career at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center. His early work involved computer communications, network management, autonomic computing, and policy-based networking. He later contributed to research on network science, mobile and wireless networks, the Internet of Things, cognitive computing, distributed analytics, edge computing, and generative artificial intelligence for communication networks. At IBM he has served as a researcher, research manager, U.S. Principal Investigator for the International Technology Alliance in Network Sciences from 2006 to 2016, and U.S. Principal Investigator for the International Technology Alliance in Distributed Analytics from 2016 to 2021. His work has contributed to IBM networking, systems-management, storage, wireless, and analytics technologies. He has authored eleven technical books based on his IBM research, more than one hundred technical papers, and numerous patents.
