He studied at Scuola Musicale, Pavia, 1946-1951. Privately in Milan in 1959 and at Berklee College of Music in the 1970s.
In Italy, he led combos from 1957 to 1960, but was not active in music in the 1960s. Led amateur big band ’69-78. Professional big band ’82.
His big band sidemen included Luis Agudo, Franco Ambrosetti, Paul Bley, Sandro Cerino, Bob Cunningham, Famoudou Don Moye, Andrea Dulbecco, Bill Evans, David Friedman, Danny Gottlieb, Donald Harrison, Paul Motian, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Jonathan Scully, Steve Swallow, Ares Tavolazzi, John Taylor, Tiziano Tononi, Gianluigi Trovesi, Joyce Yuille, Vincenzo Zitello, others ’05.
Betti van der Noot is chairman of B Communications, a prominent Milan ad agency, and has composed many jingles. He led a big band in New York City, September
