Dione Miles was born on November 26, 1921, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. She was the daughter of Lloyd R. D. and Ida May (Warner) Fayling.
Dione Miles began her studies at Kalamazoo College where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1947. Later on, in 1969 she obtained a Master of Library Science degree at Wayne State University.
Dione Miles worked for many years as an archivist and reference librarian at the Reuther Library at Wayne State University. Among other collections, she processed the papers and letters of the Industrial Workers of the World and published Something in Common: An IWW Bibliography (1986), a reference book on the International Workers of the World. In the course of writing this book, she did much research in Washington, District of Columbia, and at different universities.
In more than 5000 entries, this comprehensive bibliography provides information on IWW publications including English and foreign-language newspapers and pamphlets as well as books, journal articles, theses and dissertations, state and federal documents, and fictional accounts. The bibliography is supplemented by an excellent subject-author index, which brings together information on the various entries, and a useful chronology of IWW history.
During her life, Dione Miles also worked on a biography of Agnes Inglis, a member of the Industrial Workers of the World and an archivist at the Labadie Collection at the University of Michigan.
Dione Miles was a reference librarian who was considered to be a specialist in labor history. She is remembered for her book, Something in Common: An IWW Bibliography, which is considered to be an indispensable reference tool for students of the Industrial Workers of the World and 20th-century American labor history.
Miles was also awarded an emeritus membership in the Midwest Archives Conference for her many contributions to the organization.
