On active service during World War I. Became a Bolshevik organizer.During the Civil War, as a political officer in the Red Army on the Eastern front, led the suppression of an anti-communist revolt in Vernii (now Alma-Ata). Later in the South, fought against the Whites at the Kuban’ river. Secretary of the Moscow Association of Proletarian Writers, 1924-1925.
Became known for his novels about the Civil War, such as the classics of Soviet literature, Chapaev and Revolt. Created the image of Chapaev as a revolutionary hero of the people (Furmanov was the political controller of Chapaev’s detachment).
