In 1918, moved with his parents to Moscow. Completed N. Miaskovskii’s course in composition in 1929, then A. Goldenveizer’s course in piano in 1930 at the Moscow Conservatory. From 1922-1932, accompanist and teacher at the Moscow Music School.
Professor at the Moscow Conservatory from 1939. Prolific composer, best known for his lively suite The Comedians, and the overture to his opera Colas Breugnon. Won high honours from the Soviet government for his reverential, musically-conservative treatment of patriotic themes in compositions like the grandiloquent cantata Great Motherland.
Secretary of the Union of Soviet Composers from 1952. From 1969, headed the Council on Aesthetic Education under the Presidium of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences. Involved in many political publicrelations exercises.
